The Short Answer
Your dog's paw is a warm, humid, poorly ventilated pocket of skin that is in contact with the ground all day. It has a resident population of bacteria and yeast living on it, exactly like every other patch of skin on every animal. Those organisms eat, and as they eat, they release small volatile molecules into the air. Some of those molecules smell like corn chips.
That is the entire mechanism. It is not dirt, it is not a hygiene failure, and on a healthy dog it is not a problem.
The interesting question is not why dogs smell like corn chips. It is why the smell shows up on the paws and not on the shoulder, and why it lands on corn chips rather than on something else. Both of those have real answers.
Dogs Do Sweat, and Their Paws Are Where It Happens
The most repeated claim about frito feet is that it has nothing to do with sweat. That claim gets the anatomy backwards.
Dogs carry two different sweat gland types, and they are not distributed evenly. Across most of the body, the glands are epitrichial (older texts call them apocrine), and they empty into the hair follicle rather than onto the skin surface. Their secretion is oily and it mostly plays a role in scent signaling, not in cooling.
Eccrine glands are the other kind, and in dogs and cats they sit almost entirely in the non-haired skin of the footpads and the nose. Ohio State's veterinary histology reference on skin gland types describes them releasing their secretion by exocytosis directly onto the skin surface. That is watery sweat, deposited on the outside of the pad, in the one part of a dog that has no hair to wick it away and no airflow to speak of once the foot is on the ground.
So the pads are the only place on a dog where liquid water gets put onto a bare skin surface on purpose. Add body heat, add the enclosed space between the toes, add the hair that grows there in most breeds, and you have built a small humid chamber. Every microbiologist reading this already knows what happens next.
It is worth saying plainly, because a lot of otherwise good sources get it wrong: dogs pant to cool down, and paw sweating contributes very little to thermoregulation. But it is still sweat, and it is still landing on the exact patch of skin that smells.
Paws Are One of the Most Crowded Places on a Dog
Skin is not sterile anywhere, and the paw is busier than most of it.
When researchers sequenced canine skin in 2014, they sampled twelve sites on healthy dogs and deliberately included the dorsal interdigital skin between the fourth and fifth digits of the front paw. They found that haired skin sites carried notably higher species richness and microbial diversity than mucosal surfaces did, and Pseudomonas turned up among the genera colonizing interdigital skin. That work is published as a survey of the bacterial communities living on canine skin and it is open access if you want to read the site-by-site breakdown.
A 2024 metagenomic follow-up sampled four sites, one of which was again the interdigital region of the forepaw, and described a core healthy canine skin microbiome of roughly 230 taxa present in the large majority of dogs. Species richness differed measurably between the ear canal and the interdigital site, which is a useful reminder that different pieces of skin on the same dog run different ecosystems.
None of that is a problem. A dense, diverse resident population on the skin is what healthy skin looks like. It is the reason the smell exists, and it is also the reason the smell is usually nothing to act on.

The Molecule Behind Real Corn Chips
Corn tortilla chips smell the way they do because of a short list of aroma compounds formed during nixtamalization and frying. Food chemists have characterized that list carefully. In a 1998 study of tortilla chip flavor components in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline came out as one of the compounds carrying the characteristic roasty, corn-chip note. It is the same molecule responsible for the aroma of basmati rice, fresh popcorn, and the crust of white bread. Human noses detect it at extraordinarily low concentrations.
Bacteria make it too. Researchers working on cocoa fermentation isolated several Bacillus cereus strains and showed they produce 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline as a metabolic product, in the same journal, three years earlier. That is bacterial metabolism generating the literal corn chip molecule under ordinary conditions.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa has its own signature odorant. It produces 2-aminoacetophenone, and the smell is distinctive enough that clinical microbiologists have used it as an identification method since at least a 1979 paper in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. Lab techs describe it as grape-like or tortilla-like, which is why Pseudomonas gets named in every frito feet article ever written.
So when somebody says your dog's paws smell like corn chips, they are not reaching for a cute comparison. Small volatile molecules produced by common skin bacteria genuinely overlap with the small volatile molecules produced when corn is cooked. The nose is doing exactly what it should.
What Nobody Has Actually Measured
Now the honest part, because the rest of the internet skips it.
Nobody has published a headspace analysis of a dog's paw. There is no study that swabbed a hundred dogs' feet, ran the volatiles through a gas chromatograph, and reported which compounds were present and which organisms produced them. The Pseudomonas and Proteus attribution that appears on every page about this topic is a reasonable inference built from two things: those organisms are known skin residents, and they are known to smell a particular way in culture. That is a good hypothesis. It is not a measurement.
We are pointing this out for a reason. When a claim gets repeated across a hundred pet blogs it starts to feel established, and it is worth knowing which parts of the story are load-bearing science and which parts are educated guessing. The anatomy is solid. The microbiome data is solid. The chemistry of the compounds is solid. The specific attribution of your specific dog's specific smell to Pseudomonas is a guess, and any source telling you otherwise is overstating what is known.
Is Frito Feet Normal?
For most dogs, yes.
A mild corn chip smell that you notice when your face happens to be near your dog's feet, on a dog who is otherwise comfortable and not fussing at their paws, is the normal output of a normal skin ecosystem. It tends to be stronger after exercise, in humid weather, and in dogs with dense hair between the pads. It is often stronger on the front feet, which carry more weight and more contact time.
Plenty of people like the smell. That is not a medical position, but it is worth saying, because a lot of pages on this topic are written to make you worry about something that is doing no harm.
When the Smell Is Worth a Closer Look
The odor by itself is rarely the useful signal. What matters is the odor plus something else.
Signs That Change the Picture
Pay attention if the corn chip smell arrives together with any of these:
- Licking or chewing at the feet that is new, frequent, or focused on one paw
- Redness on the pad or in the webbing between the toes
- Rust-colored or dark staining on the hair around the feet, which is saliva
- Pads that have gone thick, spongy, or greasy to the touch
- Hair loss between the toes, or pads that look shiny where they used to look matte
- A smell that has changed character rather than intensity, especially toward something sour or musty
- Limping, or a dog who pulls the foot away when you handle it
- Discharge of any kind, or a wet look in the webbing
One of those on its own is worth watching. Two or more together is worth a phone call.
What Your Vet Checks
A vet appointment for smelly feet is usually short and mostly hands-on. Expect them to separate the toes and look at the webbing under good light, feel the pads for texture changes, check the nail folds, and take a tape impression or a swab to look at what is living there under a microscope. They will ask when it started, whether it is seasonal, whether it is one foot or four, and what your dog walks on.
Four feet at once usually points somewhere different than one foot does. One foot suggests something local, like a foreign body between the pads. Four feet, especially with licking, more often traces back to a whole-body response to something environmental or dietary, and that is a different conversation covered in common causes of scratching and reactions in dogs.
Bring notes. What your dog eats, what changed recently, whether the yard was treated, and how long the licking has been going on are all more useful to your vet than a description of the smell.
Where Yeast Fits In
Malassezia is a yeast that lives on healthy dog skin. It is a normal resident, not an invader. A 1996 survey in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association counted Malassezia organisms on the skin of clinically normal dogs and found it present on dogs with no skin complaints at all.
That matters practically. Finding yeast on a tape prep does not by itself mean much, because it is supposed to be there. What veterinary dermatologists look at is the population size relative to what is normal, and whether the skin is reacting.
When Malassezia populations climb, people usually describe the smell differently. Bacteria on paws read as corn chips. Yeast tends to read as musty, bready, or faintly like old cheese, and it often comes with greasy skin and dark staining. If the smell has changed rather than intensified, that shift in character is the detail your vet will want to hear about.
Warm and damp favors yeast the same way it favors bacteria, which is why the interdigital space keeps coming up. Drying the feet properly is the single most useful thing you can do about it at home.
How to Keep Paw Odor in Check at Home
None of this is complicated, and most of it is about moisture.
Wash and Dry, in That Order
Rinsing the feet after walks clears road salt, lawn treatment residue, pollen, and general road grime. Plain lukewarm water and a cloth is fine for daily use. A gentle pet shampoo is fine weekly.
The drying is the part people skip, and it is the part that actually matters. Separate the toes and dry between them, not just the top of the foot. A microfiber towel works better than a bath towel because it gets into the webbing. If your dog will tolerate a hair dryer on the lowest, coolest setting, that is better still.
Washing without drying makes the situation worse, not better. You have added water to the one part of the dog that already struggles to get rid of it.
Trim the Hair Between the Pads
Long hair between the pads holds water against the skin for hours after a walk, and it collects debris. Keeping it trimmed level with the pads is one of the highest-leverage things you can do, and it is the step most owners never think about.

Keep the Nails Short
Overgrown nails change how the foot loads. The toes splay differently, the webbing sits differently, and debris packs into the nail folds where it stays damp. Trimming nails is not going to change the smell on its own, but it changes the shape of the space the smell comes from, and it is a useful thing to be doing anyway.
Paw Soaks, and What They Actually Do
A soak is a way of getting the whole foot, including the webbing, into contact with something for a couple of minutes. Most veterinary paw soaks use chlorhexidine, and your vet can tell you whether one makes sense for your dog.
Home versions using diluted vinegar or povidone-iodine circulate widely on the internet. They are popular, they are cheap, and they are not well studied in dogs. If you try one, dilute it properly, use it on intact skin only, and dry the foot thoroughly afterward. If your dog's pads are cracked or open anywhere, skip it and call your vet instead.
The step people get wrong is the same one as before. A soak that is not followed by proper drying has just added moisture to a humid space.
What Not to Do
Do not try to eliminate the smell entirely. You would be trying to sterilize a piece of skin that is supposed to have a microbial population on it, and that population is part of what keeps the skin barrier working.
Do not use human antifungal creams, human topicals, or essential oils on paws without asking your vet. Dogs lick their feet, so anything you put on a paw is something your dog is going to eat.
Do not scrub. The webbing is thin skin and it does not respond well to abrasion.

Skin Folds Are a Separate Conversation
Wrinkled breeds carry the same problem in a different location. Bulldogs, Pugs, Shar Peis, and Mastiffs have folds that trap warmth and moisture the same way the interdigital space does, and they can carry their own odor entirely independent of the feet.
The routine is the same: wipe the fold, dry it thoroughly, do it regularly rather than occasionally, and do it after anything wet or muddy. If a fold is red, damp, or smells sour rather than just doggy, that is a vet visit, not a wipe.
If you are smelling something on your dog and cannot place where it is coming from, check the folds and the ears before you settle on the feet. Ears are a common source and they smell different.
