What CBD Extraction Actually Does

Under magnification they look like tiny mushrooms on stalks. Inside each one is the plant's full chemical payload: CBD, CBDa, CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV, trace THC, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Extraction is the process of getting that payload out of the trichome and into a form you can measure and dose.

Every method does this the same basic way. Introduce something the resin will dissolve into or break away from, separate the resin from the plant matter, then remove whatever you introduced. The differences come down to three questions:

  • What is the solvent? CO2, ethanol, butane, water, or nothing at all.
  • How much heat is involved? Heat drives yield up and drives volatile compounds off.
  • What has to be removed afterward? Residual solvent, plant waxes, chlorophyll.

It Starts With the Hemp Crop

The production of CBD oil for dogs and cats is a detailed and precise process that starts right from the selection of premium hemp crops. The choice of hemp is critical because the quality of the plant directly affects the quality of the CBD oil.

Hemp farmers focus on cultivating hemp that is specifically bred for its high CBD content and minimal THC levels. This cultivation process requires careful attention to factors such as soil quality, climate, and sustainable farming practices, ensuring the hemp plants grow healthy and potent.

As the hemp plants mature, special attention is given to the development of resinous trichomes. These trichomes are tiny, crystal-like structures on the surface of the hemp leaves and hemp flowers. They are the plant's natural way of producing and storing cannabinoids like CBD, along with other beneficial compounds such as terpenes and flavonoids.

The health and abundance of these trichomes are essential, as they determine the potency and purity of the CBD oil for dogs and cats. When the hemp plants reach their flowering stage, they are ready for harvest. The timing of the harvest is crucial; it needs to be done when the trichomes have reached their peak cannabinoid content. Two patterns fall out of that table.

The first is that cost and quality track together in this category, which is not true of every category. The methods that preserve the most cost the most to run.

The second is that there are only two ways to guarantee zero residual solvent: use a solvent that evaporates completely on its own (CO2), or use no solvent at all (mechanical separation). Everything else depends on the purging step being done correctly, which you cannot verify without a lab report.

Subcritical CO2 Extraction

Subcritical CO2 extraction runs carbon dioxide at low temperature and lower pressure, below the point where CO2 becomes supercritical. The CO2 stays in a liquid state and behaves as a gentle, selective solvent.

What that gets you. Volatile monoterpenes like limonene and pinene are the first compounds to evaporate under heat, and subcritical conditions keep them in the extract. Acid-form cannabinoids stay intact, so CBDa comes through as CBDa rather than converting to CBD. Plant waxes, lipids, and chlorophyll are largely not soluble in subcritical CO2, so much of the cleanup happens automatically.

What it costs you. Yield drops meaningfully compared to supercritical, and published comparisons put the reduction in the range of 20 to 30 percent. The run takes two to four times longer for the same output. The equipment is expensive and the throughput is low.

That combination, lower yield and longer runs, is why most of the industry does not use it. The math only works if you have decided the compound profile matters more than the cost per gram.

Supercritical CO2 Extraction

Push CO2 past 31 degrees Celsius and roughly 1,071 psi and it enters a supercritical state, where it diffuses like a gas but dissolves like a liquid. That combination makes it an efficient, aggressive solvent, and supercritical CO2 is the most widely used method in the hemp industry.

The process runs in a pressurized chamber. Hemp goes in, CO2 is pumped in and brought to supercritical conditions, and the resulting solution passes into a separator where the pressure drops and the CO2 flashes off as gas, leaving the extract behind. The CO2 is recaptured and cycled back through.

The advantages are real. No chemical solvent is used, so nothing needs to be purged. Nothing toxic can remain in the finished extract. Yields are strong and the process is tunable, meaning operators can adjust pressure and temperature to target specific compound fractions.

The tradeoff is heat and pressure. The same aggressiveness that drives yield also pulls out waxes and lipids that then require winterization, and it drives off the lighter terpenes. It also causes partial decarboxylation, converting some CBDa into CBD before the extract ever reaches a bottle. For a brand selling CBD, that is a non-issue. For a brand formulating around CBDa, it is the whole problem.

Ethanol Extraction

Ethanol extraction soaks hemp in food-grade alcohol, which dissolves cannabinoids and terpenes out of the plant material. It is the workhorse method for large-scale production because it scales well and the equipment is comparatively cheap.

Four steps:

Soaking. Hemp is submerged in ethanol. The alcohol penetrates the plant material and pulls cannabinoids and terpenes into solution.

Filtration. Plant solids are filtered out, leaving a cannabinoid-rich ethanol solution.

Chilling. The solution is dropped to minus 40 degrees Celsius or lower. Cold causes lipids, fats, and waxes to fall out of solution so they can be filtered off. Skip this step or run it warm and those compounds stay in the finished product.

Evaporation. Ethanol is evaporated off under controlled conditions. Most of it is recovered and reused. Trace amounts can remain, which is why third-party residual solvent testing matters on any ethanol-extracted product.

Where it falls short. Ethanol is a polar solvent, so it pulls chlorophyll and water-soluble plant compounds along with the cannabinoids. That affects color and taste and usually requires additional filtration to correct, and each correction step strips a little more. Ethanol is also the standard method for removing THC to produce broad spectrum extracts, and that same processing removes minor cannabinoids and terpenes alongside it.

Hydrocarbon Extraction: Butane and Propane

Hydrocarbon extraction uses butane, propane, or a blend as the solvent. In the cannabis world the output is called BHO, short for butane hash oil. It runs cold, which is why it is genuinely good at preserving terpenes and acid-form cannabinoids, and it is fast and cheap compared to CO2.

The process passes liquid butane over the plant material, dissolving the resin. The solution is then purged in a vacuum oven, where low pressure and gentle heat drive the butane off.

The problem is the purge. Butane and propane do not evaporate as cleanly as CO2, and residual hydrocarbon in a finished product is a real safety concern rather than a theoretical one. A properly built closed-loop system with a correctly run vacuum purge produces a clean extract. A poorly run one does not, and there is no way to tell by looking.

For a supplement going into a 12-pound cat every day, that variability is the disqualifier. The method is capable of excellent output. It just cannot be verified without trusting the operator, and residual solvent testing on every batch is the only defense.

Solventless Extraction: Dry-Sieve Kief and Ice Water Hash

Solventless extraction uses no solvent of any kind, not CO2, not alcohol, not hydrocarbons. It separates trichomes from plant material mechanically, using cold and physical agitation.

Dry sieve. Plant material is chilled until the trichome heads become brittle, then agitated over a series of progressively finer mesh screens. The frozen trichome heads snap off and fall through. What collects underneath is kief: intact resin glands with the cannabinoid and terpene profile still sealed inside, exactly as the plant made it.

Ice water hash. Same principle with water added. Plant material is agitated in ice water, the brittle trichomes break away and sink, and the slurry is strained through stacked micron bags. The collected resin is then dried.

Why this matters chemically. Every other method on this page dissolves the trichome to get at what is inside. Solventless separation never opens it. The membrane stays intact, which means nothing volatile has anywhere to go. No heat means no decarboxylation, so CBDa stays CBDa. No solvent means nothing to purge and nothing to test for.

The catch. It is slow, labor-intensive, and yields are low. It also requires starting material clean enough to survive the scrutiny, since there is no solvent step to leave the undesirable compounds behind.

Steam Distillation

Steam distillation is the traditional method for pulling essential oils out of plant material, and it works on hemp with significant limitations.

Steam passes through dried hemp, vaporizing the volatile compounds. The vapor moves into a condenser, cools back to liquid, and separates into a water layer and an oil layer. The oil is drawn off.

It is simple, it uses no solvent, and it is inexpensive. It is also the worst method on this list for cannabinoid work. The heat required to generate steam degrades heat-sensitive cannabinoids and fully decarboxylates the acid forms. Yields are low enough that it takes substantially more plant material for the same output. It survives in the industry mostly for terpene isolation rather than for producing a full spectrum extract.

The temperature line is the whole story. Decarboxylation, the reaction that converts CBDa into CBD, is driven by heat. Supercritical conditions sit high enough on that curve that partial conversion happens during extraction. Subcritical conditions sit low enough that it largely does not.

Some operations run both in sequence, taking a subcritical pass first to capture the delicate compounds and then a supercritical pass on the same material to maximize total yield. That is a reasonable engineering compromise, and it is also why "CO2 extracted" on a label tells you less than it seems to.

What to ask instead: does the certificate of analysis show CBDa as a separate line item, and is the number meaningful? An extract that ran hot will show CBDa near zero. That single number tells you more about the process than any marketing copy on the box.

What Happens After Extraction

Extraction produces crude oil, not a finished product. What happens between the extractor and the bottle changes the final composition as much as the extraction method did.

Winterization

Crude extract from a supercritical CO2 or ethanol run contains plant waxes, lipids, and fats alongside the cannabinoids. Left in, they make the oil cloudy, thick, and unstable in storage.

Winterization removes them. The crude is dissolved in ethanol, chilled to around minus 40 degrees Celsius, and held there. The waxes and lipids become insoluble at that temperature and precipitate out as solids, which are filtered off. The ethanol is then evaporated.

The result is clearer, more stable, and more concentrated. It has also been through a second solvent exposure and a second evaporation, and some terpenes leave with the ethanol.

Solventless methods largely skip this step, because they never pulled the waxes in the first place. One fewer processing stage is one fewer opportunity to lose something.

Decarboxylation, and Why Earth Buddy Skips It for CBDa

In the living hemp plant, there is almost no CBD. What the plant actually produces is CBDa, cannabidiolic acid, the raw carboxylated form.

Decarboxylation is the heat-driven reaction that removes a carboxyl group and converts CBDa into CBD. It happens slowly at room temperature, quickly under heat, and it is standard practice across most of the industry. Extract is deliberately heated to drive the conversion to completion so the label can carry one clean CBD number.

Earth Buddy does not do this for every product, and the reason is mechanistic rather than stylistic.

CBDa is not a less-finished version of CBD. It is a structurally different molecule that interacts with the body through different pathways, and canine mobility research is what informed Earth Buddy's decision to formulate around it. Mobility Hemp Extract uses a 4:1 CBDa to CBD ratio and Balance Hemp Extract uses 1:1, both built specifically to keep the acid form intact. CBDa is also frequently better tolerated in sensitive animals, which matters in a category where dosing is by body weight and the patient cannot describe how they feel.

Preserving CBDa is only possible if the extraction ran cool enough not to destroy it first. This is where extraction method stops being a technical footnote and starts determining what a formulation can be.

Distillation and Isolation

Some producers push further. Short-path or wiped-film distillation separates the extract by boiling point, concentrating a single cannabinoid into distillate, typically 80 to 90 percent pure. Going further still, chromatography and crystallization strip everything else away to produce CBD isolate at 99 percent or higher.

Each step up in purity is a step down in complexity. Distillate has lost most of its terpenes. Isolate has lost everything, and getting there generally involves solvents like hexane, pentane, or butane.

Purity and completeness pull in opposite directions. Which one you want depends entirely on what you are formulating.

Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and CBD Isolate

Extraction and post-processing produce three commercial categories.

Full spectrum retains the complete profile: CBD, CBDa, CBG, CBN, CBC, CBDV, terpenes, flavonoids, and trace THC at or below the 0.3 percent federal limit set by the 2018 Farm Bill. Those compounds interact with each other and with the endocannabinoid system along multiple pathways at once, which is the entourage effect.

Broad spectrum is full spectrum with the THC stripped out. Removing it requires additional solvent processing, and that processing takes minor cannabinoids and terpenes with it. The category exists largely to address consumer concern about THC, which is far more relevant to humans facing drug tests than to dogs and cats.

Isolate is CBD alone, 99 percent or higher, with everything else removed. Cheapest to produce, easiest to dose precisely, and no entourage effect.

Solventless CBD Kief

Why Extraction Method Matters More for Pets Than People

Most CBD extraction content is written for a human market. A few things change when the consumer is a 12-pound cat or an 80-pound dog.

Dose is by body weight, and so is exposure. A residual solvent level that is trivially small for a 180-pound adult is proportionally fifteen times larger for a 12-pound cat. Trace contamination scales the wrong direction as the animal gets smaller.

Cats process compounds differently. Feline hepatic metabolism handles certain compounds along different pathways than canine or human metabolism, which is why cats warrant more conservative products generally, not just smaller portions.

How to Verify What Is Actually in the Bottle

Extraction claims are unverifiable on their own. A certificate of analysis is not.

Here is what to check on any pet CBD product, regardless of brand:

Cannabinoid potency. Do the numbers match the label? Is CBDa listed separately, and is it a meaningful figure or effectively zero? A near-zero CBDa reading means the extract was decarboxylated somewhere in the process.

Terpene panel. Many brands do not test for terpenes at all, and its absence tells you something. A full spectrum claim with no terpene data is unsupported.

Residual solvents. Should be non-detect. Relevant for ethanol and hydrocarbon extraction, not applicable to CO2 or solventless.

Heavy metals and pesticides. These test the soil, not the extraction, and they are why farming practice matters.

Mold and mycotoxins. Tests harvesting and curing conditions.

Batch matching. Does the COA correspond to the batch number on the product you are holding, or is it a generic result for the product line?

What is the best CBD extraction method?

CO2 extraction and solventless mechanical separation are the two methods that cannot leave chemical residue behind, which makes them the safest options for products consumed daily. Between the CO2 variants, subcritical preserves more terpenes and keeps CBDa intact, while supercritical produces higher yields at lower cost. "Best" depends on what the formulation needs. If the product is built around CBDa or terpene content, subcritical or solventless is the only way to get there.

Is CO2 extracted CBD better than ethanol extracted CBD?
