Common Dog Allergies: Types, Signs, and What Actually Helps

Dog allergies fall into four buckets: food, flea, contact, and environmental. Environmental is by far the most common, and true food allergies are much rarer than most pet parents assume, affecting roughly 0.2% of dogs according to Banfield's analysis of 2.5 million patients. The signs almost always show up on the outside first: scratching, paw licking, head shaking, red eyes, and repeat ear issues. Testing is done through blood panels or intradermal skin testing at your vet. On the support side, the most useful place to start is the gut, since roughly 70% of a dog's immune tissue sits in the gut wall. What Causes Allergies in Dogs?

This is why allergies often appear out of nowhere in a dog who has eaten the same food or walked the same trail for years. The exposure was always there. The antibodies are what is new.

Genetics play a real role. A 2020 study in Scientific Reports looking at nearly 6,000 dogs and their owners found that allergic traits in dogs tracked with living environment, lifestyle, and microbial exposure, and that dogs in urban homes with less microbial diversity showed allergic traits more often. Research on this is still developing and none of it guarantees an outcome for any individual dog, but the direction is consistent: early-life microbial exposure and gut diversity matter.

Unlike people, dogs do not commonly develop severe peanut allergies, and true anaphylaxis is rare. What dogs get instead is chronic, low-grade, skin-first misery.

Environmental allergies are the most common of the four. Banfield's 2018 State of Pet Health Report, drawn from more than 2.5 million dogs, put environmental allergy prevalence at 3.6% of dogs and rising, flea allergy at 1.8%, and food allergy at just 0.2%. If your dog is itchy and you have not addressed fleas or the environment yet, food is statistically the least likely culprit even though it is the first place most people look.

Roughly 30% of food-allergic dogs and cats turn out to have a second allergic skin condition on top of it, so these categories overlap more often than they sort cleanly.

Signs of Allergies in Dogs

Dogs do not sneeze their way through allergy season the way people do. In dogs, the response shows up on the skin, in the ears, and around the eyes and paws. Here is what to actually watch for.

Skin and Coat Signs

Persistent scratching is the signal most owners notice first, and it usually concentrates on the belly, armpits, groin, and face rather than spreading evenly. You may also see red patches, small bumps, thinning fur or bald spots where a dog has been chewing, a dull coat that used to be glossy, and increased flaking or dandruff. Hot spots are the endpoint of this cycle: a dog licks one area long enough that the skin barrier gives out and stays wet.

If flaking is the main thing you are seeing, dandruff in dogs has its own set of causes worth ruling out separately.

Ear Signs

Repeat ear problems are one of the most reliable tells. Dogs with environmental allergies often develop recurring ear issues because the same immune response that affects skin affects the ear canal lining, and a warm, moist canal is where secondary problems take hold. Watch for head shaking, scratching at one ear, redness inside the flap, odor, or dark discharge. Eye Signs

Red, weepy, or squinting eyes show up more often than most pet parents expect. Clear discharge, rubbing the face along furniture or carpet, and pawing at the eyes all point toward an environmental trigger, especially when it tracks with pollen season. Thick yellow or green discharge is a different situation and warrants a same-week vet visit rather than a wait-and-see.

Paw Signs

Constant paw licking is one of the clearest environmental allergy signals there is, and it makes sense: paws are in direct contact with grass, pollen, and lawn treatments every time a dog goes outside. Look for reddish-brown staining on white fur between the toes, swollen or puffy pads, chewing at the webbing, and limping that comes and goes. The pattern that matters most: when skin and gut issues appear together, food moves up the list of suspects. When skin issues appear alone and follow a seasonal rhythm, environmental moves up. Food Allergies in Dogs

A food allergy is an immune response to a specific ingredient in a dog's diet. These can develop at any age, and they routinely appear in dogs who have eaten the same food for years without a problem, because the antibodies take time to build.

Food allergies are genuinely uncommon. The Banfield data puts them at 0.2% of dogs, and a 2017 review in BMC Veterinary Research that pooled 22 studies found cutaneous adverse food reactions in only 1% to 2% of dogs presented to a vet for any reason. Among dogs already diagnosed with an allergic skin condition, the range was wider, 8% to 62%, which tells you how much the number depends on which dogs you are looking at.

How an Elimination Diet Works

An elimination diet is still the only reliable way to identify a food allergen. There is no blood test that does this accurately.

The process replaces your dog's current food with a simplified diet built around a protein and carbohydrate the dog has never eaten. That diet runs exclusively for 8 to 12 weeks, with no treats, no flavored supplements, no table scraps, and no flavored parasite preventives. Anything with a protein in it can invalidate the trial.

If the response quiets down during that window, the original food goes back in to see whether it returns. If it does, you have your answer, and individual ingredients can then be reintroduced one at a time to find the specific trigger.

Timing expectations matter here, because most people quit too early. Digestive changes often settle within a few days of removing the trigger. Skin takes far longer, typically two to four weeks minimum, and sometimes the full 8 to 12, because a dog's skin cells need roughly three to four weeks to cycle from the deeper layers to the surface. You are waiting on new skin to grow.

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance

These get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.

A food allergy is an immune response. Antibodies are involved, skin is usually affected, and even a small amount of the trigger sets it off.

A food intolerance is a digestive response with no immune component. Think lactose. The dog cannot process something efficiently, so it causes gas or loose stool, but the immune system is not participating, and the amount often matters.

Ask your veterinarian which one you are dealing with, because the approach diverges. Intolerance often responds to portion changes or digestive support. An allergy requires full avoidance.

Flea Allergies in Dogs

A flea allergy is a response to proteins in flea saliva, not to the bite itself. That distinction is why a single flea can set off a reaction that lasts for weeks, and why you can have a severely affected dog with no visible fleas anywhere on him.

Kansas State University researchers demonstrated this experimentally, showing that dogs exposed to fleas on an intermittent schedule developed stronger flea-specific IgE responses than dogs under continuous exposure. In practice: a dog with year-round flea control who picks up the occasional flea at the dog park can react harder than a dog living with a constant low-level infestation.

Flea allergy is on the rise. Banfield recorded a 12.5% increase in dogs over ten years, with 2017 prevalence at 1.8%.

Flea control is the entire game here, and it has to cover both the dog and the environment, since the majority of a flea population lives in carpet, bedding, and yard rather than on the animal. Expect this to take weeks to months, not days, and treat every pet in the household even if only one is reacting. Your veterinarian can walk you through the options, and a holistic vet can talk through the natural approaches if that is your preference.

The tell for flea allergies is location: the base of the tail, the lower back, and the backs of the hind legs. That distribution is different from environmental allergies, which favor the paws, belly, and face.

  • Metals, especially nickel in collar hardware and bowls
  • Rubber, including some toys and food bowls
  • Certain plastics
  • Fabrics and fabric dyes

Contact reactions concentrate on the parts of the body with the least fur: belly, groin, chin, muzzle, and paws. If the pattern on your dog maps to where he lies down or what he eats out of, contact is worth investigating before anything else.

Environmental and Seasonal Allergies in Dogs

Environmental allergies are the most common category in dogs and the one most likely to explain a chronically itchy dog. They are also the reason "seasonal" is such a useful diagnostic clue: if your dog is miserable every April and fine in December, the trigger is outside.

Banfield recorded a 30.7% increase in environmental allergies in dogs over a decade, making it the fastest-growing category of the four.

Common Environmental Allergens

  • Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. Which pollen matters depends entirely on your region and the time of year.
  • Mold, which releases airborne spores and thrives in damp, humid spaces both indoors and out.
  • Dust mites, which live in household dust and feed on shed skin cells. These are the main reason some dogs get worse indoors in winter.
  • Grass, which is a direct-contact trigger as much as an airborne one.
  • Dander, including from other pets in the home.
  • Feathers, found in some bedding and toys.

How to Lower Allergen Exposure at Home

You cannot eliminate environmental allergens, but you can lower the load, and load is what matters.

Wipe paws and belly with a damp cloth every time your dog comes in from outside. Run a HEPA filter in the room where your dog sleeps. Wash bedding weekly in hot water. Vacuum more often than feels necessary during peak season, and empty the canister outside. Bathe with a gentle, unscented shampoo to physically rinse pollen off the coat rather than letting it sit. Keep windows closed on high-pollen days and use air conditioning instead.

Diet plays a role too. Omega-3 fatty acids support skin barrier function and a healthy inflammatory response, which is why fish oil is one of the few supplements with broad veterinary agreement behind it.

Allergy Testing for Dogs: What to Expect

Veterinarians use allergy testing to identify which specific allergens a dog is responding to. There are two methods.

Blood testing (serum IgE testing) draws a sample and screens it for antibodies against a panel of common allergens. It is less invasive, does not require sedation, and can be run at a general practice. It is generally considered less precise than skin testing for environmental allergens.

Intradermal skin testing injects tiny amounts of individual allergens under the skin and measures the local response to each. It is the reference standard for environmental allergies, and it is usually performed by a veterinary dermatologist with the dog sedated.

Neither test identifies food allergies reliably. Blood and saliva tests marketed for food sensitivity have not held up well under scrutiny, and the elimination diet remains the only dependable method. If a testing service promises to identify your dog's food allergies from a hair or saliva sample, treat that claim skeptically.

Testing is most valuable when the results will change what you do, most often because you are considering immunotherapy, which is formulated from the specific allergens a dog reacts to.

Start With the Gut

Roughly 70% of a dog's immune tissue sits in the wall of the gut. That is not a marketing line, it is where gut-associated lymphoid tissue lives, and it is why gut integrity keeps coming up in immune conversations.

What the Research Says About CBD and CBDa

Research here is developing and nothing in it guarantees a result for any individual dog, but it is worth knowing what exists.

A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial published in Veterinary Dermatology in 2022 gave dogs 2 mg/kg of a mixed CBD and CBDa oil twice daily for four weeks. Lesion scores did not differ significantly between groups. Itch scores, measured on a pruritus visual analog scale, were significantly lower in the treatment group at both day 14 and day 28.
