Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give plants their smell, and hemp makes dozens of them. In a full spectrum CBD oil they do two jobs: some interact with the same receptor network that cannabinoids use, and others appear to influence behavior through scent alone. Two peer-reviewed studies on dogs found that lavender aroma, which is rich in linalool, was associated with calmer behavior during car travel and in a shelter. Terpenes at the natural levels found in a whole-plant extract are a different thing from concentrated essential oils, which carry real risk for dogs and cats.
What Terpenes Are, and Why Plants Bother Making Them
Walk past a lilac in June and the smell that reaches you is terpenes evaporating off the flower. Same with pine needles, cracked black pepper, a lemon peel, and fresh hemp.
Plants do not make these compounds for us. Terpenes are secondary metabolites, meaning the plant does not need them to grow, and it spends energy on them anyway. That energy buys the plant a chemical vocabulary. Some terpenes pull in pollinators. Some repel the insects that would eat the leaves. Some are antimicrobial and go up at the site of a wound. Some help the plant handle heat and light stress. A cannabis plant grown in real sun, in real soil, with real pest pressure builds a different terpene profile than one grown in a sterile room, because it had different problems to solve.
That is worth sitting with for a second, because it explains something about sourcing. Terpene content is not a specification a grower dials in. It is a record of what the plant lived through.

Terpenes vs. Terpenoids
You will see both words, often in the same paragraph, and the distinction is small but real.
Terpenes are the compounds as they exist in the living plant, built from repeating five-carbon isoprene units. Terpenoids are terpenes that have been chemically modified, usually by oxidation, which is what happens when plant material is dried and cured. Most of what is measured in a finished hemp extract is technically a mix of both.
For a pet parent reading a lab report, the practical takeaway is that the two terms get used interchangeably, and nothing about your dog's experience hinges on which word a brand chose.
How Terpenes Actually Reach Your Dog's Nervous System
This is the step most articles skip, and it is the one that determines whether any of this matters.
Through the Nose
A dog's nose is not a smaller version of yours. Estimates put canine olfactory receptors somewhere around 200 to 300 million, against roughly 5 or 6 million in a person, and a much larger share of the canine brain is devoted to processing what comes in through it.
Odor molecules that land on the olfactory epithelium trigger signals that travel to the olfactory bulb and from there to the limbic system, which is the part of the brain handling emotional response and memory. That pathway is short and direct, which is why a smell can shift how an animal feels before any conscious processing happens. Terpenes are volatile, which is exactly what makes them smellable, and it is also what makes them the part of a plant that reaches this pathway first.
For a dog, this means the aromatic side of a supplement is not incidental packaging. It is a route of exposure in its own right.
Through the Gut
The second route is the ordinary one. Terpenes swallowed in an oil or a chew are absorbed alongside the cannabinoids and the carrier fat, and some of them interact with receptor systems once they get there.
Beta-caryophyllene is the clearest case. It is the one terpene confirmed to bind the CB2 receptor, which is part of the endocannabinoid system, the same network CBD works through. That makes it unusual: most terpenes influence the body through other mechanisms, and beta-caryophyllene walks in the same door as the cannabinoids do.

What Research on Dogs Actually Shows
Almost every terpene article you will find, including the ones from brands that sell pet products, cites rodent studies and human aromatherapy trials and then quietly hopes you assume it transfers to dogs.
There is dog-specific research. It is small, it is old, and there is not much of it, but it exists and it is worth knowing exactly what it found.
Lavender and Car Travel
Deborah Wells published a study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2006 looking at dogs that got worked up during car rides. Dogs were exposed to lavender aroma while traveling, and during the lavender condition they spent more time resting and sitting, and less time moving around and vocalizing, compared to a control condition with no added odor.
Lavender's dominant aromatic compound is linalool.
Lavender and Chamomile in a Shelter
A year earlier, Graham, Wells, and Hepper published a study in Applied Animal Behaviour Science on dogs housed in a rescue shelter, a genuinely stressful environment. They compared five odor conditions. Dogs exposed to lavender and chamomile spent more time resting and less time moving, and vocalized less. Dogs exposed to peppermint and rosemary moved more and vocalized more.
Chamomile is a primary natural source of alpha-bisabolol. That result also cuts the other way, which is the part worth remembering: two of the five odors were associated with more activity, not less. Aromatic compounds are not uniformly settling.
What These Studies Do Not Show
Both studies measured observable behavior in a controlled setting over a short window. Neither one isolated a single terpene molecule, neither followed the dogs long term, and neither one was studying a supplement. The samples were small.
So the honest framing is this: there is real evidence that terpene-carrying plant odors are associated with measurable behavior changes in dogs, and there is not yet evidence telling us how much of any specific terpene does what, at what dose, in what dog. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling past the research.

A single hemp cultivar can produce dozens of terpenes. These seven are the ones that show up most in the extracts we make, and they are the ones you will see itemized on a lab report.

Myrcene
Myrcene is usually the most abundant terpene in a hemp extract, and it is the one most consistently associated with a settled, heavy, relaxed quality. Earthy and musky, closer to damp soil than to anything floral.
One correction worth making, because it circulates widely and it is backwards: myrcene is not stimulating. In the research it is the sedating end of the spectrum, not the uplifting one. Where the caution belongs is on concentration. Myrcene isolated and added back at artificially high levels is a different exposure from myrcene at the level a plant produced on its own, and "more" is not the goal with any of these compounds.

Beta-Caryophyllene
The interesting one. In 2008, Jürg Gertsch and colleagues published work in PNAS showing that beta-caryophyllene selectively binds the CB2 receptor, which led them to describe it as a dietary cannabinoid. It is a terpene by structure and it behaves like a cannabinoid at the receptor.
CB2 receptors sit largely on immune cells and in peripheral tissue rather than in the brain, which is part of why beta-caryophyllene is associated with supporting a healthy inflammatory response without the mental cloudiness people associate with cannabis.
Your dog has eaten it before. It is what makes black pepper taste like black pepper. It concentrates in the trichomes on the hemp flower, which is precisely where the oil is extracted from. Full detail at our beta-caryophyllene page.
Linalool
Linalool is the compound behind lavender, and it is the terpene with the most direct line to the canine research above. Both dog studies used lavender.
There is supporting work in other species. A 2018 study in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience found that linalool odor, inhaled rather than injected, was associated with lower stress behavior in mice, and the effect depended on an intact sense of smell. That last detail matters, because it points at the olfactory pathway rather than at anything absorbed into the bloodstream.
Which raises the obvious question, and we answer it directly in the essential oil section below: no, this is not a reason to put lavender oil on your dog.
Alpha-Pinene
Pinene smells like a forest floor because it largely is one. It is the dominant terpene in conifer resin and it shows up in rosemary, basil, and dill.

Alpha-pinene is associated with alertness and clear-headedness rather than settling, and it is often described as offsetting the fog that heavier terpenes can produce. In a working dog, a dog in a training program, or a senior dog whose engagement has dropped off, that end of the profile is arguably the more useful one. Not every dog needs to be more relaxed. Some need to be more present.
Humulene
Humulene, sometimes called alpha-caryophyllene, is what gives hops their character and it is why an IPA smells the way it does. Woody and herbal, with a bitter edge.
Its most documented property is appetite signaling, and it points the opposite direction from what most people expect from cannabis: humulene is associated with appetite suppression, not stimulation. Alpha-Bisabolol
Alpha-bisabolol is the main active in chamomile, and it is the second terpene with a thread back to the shelter study, where chamomile was one of the two odors associated with more resting and less vocalizing.
It also has a long history in skin care, where it is used for its soothing properties and its ability to help other compounds absorb. Soft, faintly sweet, and floral without being sharp. See our alpha-bisabolol page.
Nerolidol
Nerolidol is the quiet one, present in smaller amounts but doing real work. Woody with a faint citrus edge, found in jasmine, ginger, and lemongrass.
It is best known as a skin penetration enhancer, meaning it helps other compounds cross the skin barrier, which is why it matters more in a topical than in an oil. It is also associated with rest. More at our nerolidol page.
Terpenes Are Not Essential Oils, and the Difference Matters
This is the section most terpene articles leave out, and leaving it out is how pet parents end up doing something genuinely unsafe with good intentions.
Everything above describes terpenes at the concentration a plant makes them, delivered inside a whole-plant extract. A lavender essential oil is the same molecules pulled out and concentrated by orders of magnitude. Roughly speaking, it can take dozens of pounds of plant material to produce a single pound of essential oil. The compound is identical. The dose is not remotely.
The Merck Veterinary Manual documents toxicoses from essential oils in dogs and cats, including from tea tree, pennyroyal, wintergreen, pine, citrus, peppermint, eucalyptus, and cinnamon. Routes include ingestion, skin contact, and inhalation from diffusers. Concentrated essential oils are not a home remedy version of what is in a hemp extract, and the fact that a terpene shows up on a COA is not permission to buy the oil version of it.
Two practical lines to hold:
Do not apply undiluted essential oils to your dog, and do not add them to food or water. If you want aromatic support, that is a conversation to have with a veterinarian trained in it, not a substitute you improvise.
Watch the diffuser. A dog cannot leave the room when you can. If you run one, keep it in a space your dog can walk out of, keep sessions short, and stop if you see drooling, pawing at the face, squinting, wobbliness, or your dog actively avoiding the room.
Why Cats Need Even More Caution
Cats are not small dogs here, and the reason is metabolic. Cats have limited glucuronidation capacity, which is one of the liver's main pathways for clearing certain plant compounds, so compounds that a dog processes without incident can accumulate in a cat. Essential oils are on the short list of things veterinary toxicologists flag hardest for cats, and liquid potpourri belongs in the same category.
None of that argues against terpenes in a properly formulated feline product at natural levels. It argues against the concentrated version, in a household with a cat, full stop.

Full Spectrum CBD That Keeps Its Terpenes
How Terpenes Change What CBD Does
The entourage effect is the idea that the compounds in a whole plant produce something different together than any one of them produces alone. Ethan Russo laid out the case for it in the British Journal of Pharmacology in 2011, mapping specific terpene and cannabinoid pairings and where the synergy might come from.
Some of what gets said about the entourage effect is oversold. The honest version is that it is a well-supported hypothesis with real mechanistic backing and incomplete clinical proof, and that the mechanistic backing is strongest for exactly the pairings you would predict. Beta-caryophyllene binding CB2 while CBD acts elsewhere in the same system is not a vague synergy story. It is two compounds working the same network from different angles.

What Earth Buddy's Own Calming Study Found
Most of what is written about terpenes and calm comes from labs. In 2022 we ran something different: a real-world consumer study on pets in their own homes, using their own routines, over 26 days.
Forty-nine pets took part, 93% of them dogs, in partnership with MoreBetter and the Veterinary Cannabis Society. It remains the first real-world consumer study testing multiple full spectrum CBD formats for daily calming support in dogs.
By Day 25, 92% of pet parents reported their dog was coping better with stress, up from 62% at the start. Stress scores improved 37%, a statistically significant change. Format mattered: Calming Chews for Dogs showed the fastest day-one response at roughly 89%, while CBD Oil for Dogs and Quick Calm built more gradually over two to three weeks. Day-one response here means behavior the pet parent observed and reported, not a pharmacological onset measurement.

How to Tell If a Product Still Has Its Terpenes
Here is the uncomfortable part of this category. Terpenes are volatile and fragile. They evaporate with heat, they degrade with time, and they are the first thing lost in aggressive processing. A product can be labeled full spectrum, test clean for potency, and still have almost nothing aromatic left in it.
Read the COA, Not the Label
A Certificate of Analysis is the only place the answer lives, and most brands publish only a cannabinoid panel. A cannabinoid panel tells you how much CBD is in the bottle. It tells you nothing about terpenes.
What to look for:
A terpene panel at all. If the COA has cannabinoids and contaminants but no terpene section, the brand either did not test for them or chose not to publish. Neither is a good sign on a product sold on the strength of full spectrum.
Batch-specific results. A single COA linked site-wide for every product and every batch is a marketing document. Real terpene content varies batch to batch, because plants vary season to season.
Variation between batches. This is the counterintuitive one. Identical terpene numbers across every batch suggest terpenes were added back after the fact rather than retained from the plant. Natural variation is a sign of a real extract, not a defect.

Signs of Over-Processing
Every step after extraction costs terpenes. Distillation strips them. Chromatography to remove THC takes terpenes with it, which is the whole reason broad spectrum products often smell like nothing. Heat at any stage drives them off.
Some clues you can pick up without a lab:
It has no smell. A full spectrum extract smells like the plant it came from. Green, earthy, slightly sharp. If a hemp oil smells like nothing at all, the aromatic fraction is gone.
It is water-clear. Crystal clarity in a hemp oil generally indicates heavy refinement. A less processed extract carries color.
The label says full spectrum but the ingredient list says distillate. Those two claims fight each other.
It smells strongly of one thing. An extract that smells overwhelmingly of a single note, especially a note that does not belong to hemp, often has isolated terpenes added back to compensate for what was lost.

What Terpenes Will Not Do
A short list, because this category oversells constantly and the correction is part of the value of this page.
Terpenes will not sedate a dog. Nothing described here knocks an animal out, and a product that does is doing it with something other than terpenes.
Terpenes will not resolve a behavior pattern on their own. The dog who destroys the couch when you leave needs a plan: enrichment, gradual departure work, exercise, and often a professional. Terpenes will not work instantly through a bottle. The response reported in our Calming Study built over weeks for two of the three formats.
Terpenes are not a substitute for a veterinary exam. A change in behavior can be the first observable sign of something physical, and a sudden shift in an adult dog is a reason to book an appointment rather than to try a supplement first.
