Why Dogs Respond More Noticeably Than Humans

Receptor density is the reason. A dog's brainstem carries more CB1 receptors per unit of tissue than a human's does, and the brainstem governs autonomic function: breathing rate, heart rate, arousal level, the baseline settings of the nervous system.

More receptors in that region means more available binding sites for the same input. Why CB2 Is the Lesser-Known Receptor

CB1 was identified and cloned in 1990. CB2 followed three years later, and by then the research momentum was already behind CB1.

What Activates These Receptors Naturally

Your dog and cat produce their own cannabinoids. These are called endocannabinoids, and they are the receptors' native keys. A review of the endocannabinoid system across animal species found the same basic architecture running through every mammal studied.

They are made on demand. The body does not stockpile them. When a cell needs to adjust a signal, it builds the molecule at that moment, sends it backward across the synapse to the receptor, and then destroys it. The whole cycle is measured in seconds.

Anandamide and 2-AG

Two endocannabinoids do most of the work.

Anandamide is the one most associated with CB1. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word for bliss, which tells you something about what researchers observed when they found it. In dogs and cats it is tied to emotional balance and appetite.

2-AG is present at higher concentrations and engages both receptors, with a stronger association with CB2 and immune signaling.

Does CBD Bind to CB1 and CB2 Receptors?

Mostly, no. And that surprises people.

THC binds directly and strongly to CB1. That direct binding is what produces intoxication in humans. CBD does not do this. Its binding affinity for both CB1 and CB2 is low, and if direct receptor binding were the whole mechanism, CBD would do very little.
