Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are different products from different parts of the same plant. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seeds. It is a food oil, rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and it contains no meaningful CBD. CBD oil is extracted from the flower and leaf, where the cannabinoids are.
Both have a place. Only one of them contains cannabinoids. If a product label says "hemp oil" and does not state a cannabinoid milligram total, assume it is seed oil and price it accordingly.
Cats Process CBD Differently Than Dogs
This is the part most cat CBD articles skip, and it is the part that actually changes how you use the product.
In a 2019 Cornell study, healthy dogs and healthy cats were given the same 2 mg/kg oral dose of a CBD-rich hemp product. The dogs reached a mean peak plasma concentration of 301 ng/mL. The cats reached 43 ng/mL. Total exposure over time, measured as area under the curve, came in at 1,297 ng·h/mL for dogs and 164 ng·h/mL for cats. Same dose per kilogram, roughly one-eighth the plasma exposure in cats.
Two practical things follow from that.
First, a cat is not a small dog, and you should not use a dog bottle as a cat bottle with a smaller squeeze. The measurement precision is different and so is the absorption.
Second, cats build exposure over time. In a 26-week study out of the WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute, cats fed 4 mg/kg daily showed measurably higher total CBD exposure after two weeks of daily dosing than they did on day one, from the identical dose. The compound accumulates toward a steady state. That is the physiological reason a two to three week trial tells you more than a single dose does, and it is why "it didn't work" after four days is not actually a result.
Both studies also found the plasma peak lands around two hours after the dose in cats, compared to closer to 1.4 hours in dogs. If you are timing a dose around a car ride or a vet appointment, build in the extra hour.
Is CBD Safe for Cats? What the Feline Research Shows
Cats have been studied less than dogs, and any page that tells you otherwise is selling something. What does exist is consistent.
Healthy cats given escalating single doses from 2.5 mg/kg all the way to 80 mg/kg tolerated them, with behavior scoring, bloodwork, and physical exams run before and after each step. A separate escalating-dose study reached 30.5 mg/kg of CBD in healthy cats without a tolerability failure. And the 26-week WALTHAM feeding study found no clinically significant differences in hematology or biochemistry between the CBD group and placebo across the full half-year.
The one signal that shows up more than once is liver enzymes. In the 2019 Cornell work, one cat showed a persistent rise in ALT above the reference range. In the first arm of the WALTHAM study, the CBD group ran higher on ALT at week four, though across the longer 26-week arm the values landed statistically equivalent to placebo.
None of that is a reason to avoid CBD oil for cats. It is a reason to keep your vet in the loop, especially if your cat already has bloodwork on file worth comparing against.
What Your Vet Will Want to Know
Bring these to the conversation:
Any prescription your cat is currently on. CBD is processed by the same liver enzyme family that handles a long list of common feline medications, so timing and dose are worth a professional opinion rather than a guess.
Whether your cat has had bloodwork done recently, and whether you have the numbers. A baseline makes any future panel actually mean something.
