What Are Triterpenes? A Guide to Mushroom Compounds for Dogs & Cats

Triterpenes are 30-carbon compounds built from three terpene units. In functional mushrooms they show up as ganoderic acids, lucidenic acids, inotodiol, and about 200 other structural families. They are the bitter half of a mushroom. Beta-glucans are the other half. The two dissolve in different things, which means a mushroom powder made with water alone contains almost no triterpenes at all. Reishi carries the highest concentration of any species in Earth Buddy's blend.

Triterpenes have been part of traditional practice across Asia for centuries. Western science only started cataloguing them in earnest over the last few decades, and the count keeps climbing. There are at least 5,000 known triterpenes in nature and roughly 140,000 described mushroom species, most of which have never been chemically profiled.

What Are Triterpenes?

A terpene is a small aromatic molecule built from five-carbon isoprene units. Bind three terpene units together and you get a triterpene: 30 carbon atoms, six isoprene units, and a structure that behaves very differently from the parent molecule.

That difference matters more than it sounds. The terpenes in hemp are volatile. They evaporate, you can smell them, and they carry the scent of the plant. Triterpenes are heavier, non-volatile, and mostly fat-soluble. You cannot smell them. You can taste them, and in Reishi that taste is unmistakably bitter. Bitterness is the field marker for triterpene density.

Triterpenes are not exclusive to fungi. They sit in the waxy outer layer of plants, in roots and stems, in fruit peels, and in tree bark, where they function as part of the organism's chemical defense system. The compound your dog encounters in a mushroom extract evolved to protect the fungus from bacteria and competing organisms in the soil.

Triterpenes vs. Beta-Glucans: The Two Halves of a Mushroom

Most mushroom supplement labels talk about beta-glucans. Very few mention triterpenes. Both compounds are in the same organism, and the reason one gets named and the other does not comes down to chemistry.

The practical consequence: a hot-water-only extract captures beta-glucans and leaves most triterpenes in the discarded mushroom material. An alcohol-only extract does the reverse. Getting both requires a dual or triple extraction, which costs more and takes longer, which is why most of the category skips it.

This is also why beta-glucan percentage alone is a poor proxy for supplement quality. It measures one compound class and says nothing about the other.

How Triterpenes Form, From Squalene to Ganoderic Acid

Every triterpene starts as squalene, a long, straight 30-carbon hydrocarbon. Squalene is common. It occurs in olive oil, amaranth seed, rice bran, wheat germ, and famously in shark liver oil, and it is the biochemical precursor to all plant and animal sterols, including cholesterol.

Turning squalene into a triterpene takes two steps.

First, an enzyme called squalene epoxidase converts squalene into 2,3-oxidosqualene. Second, a family of enzymes called oxidosqualene cyclases folds that straight chain into rings. This step is called cyclization, and it is where the diversity comes from. Small differences in which enzyme does the folding produce entirely different ring structures, which then get further modified by oxidation and the addition of functional groups.

Fungi, plants, bacteria, and protozoans all run some version of this process. The number of possible outcomes is why 5,000 triterpenes exist from a single starting molecule.

In Reishi, this pathway produces ganoderic acids. In Chaga it produces inotodiol and trametenolic acid. Same starting material, different enzymes, different compounds, different behavior in the body.

The Main Families of Triterpenes

Triterpenes are classified by how many rings the cyclization step produced. Chemists have documented roughly 200 distinct structural frameworks across six categories: acyclic, monocyclic, bicyclic, tricyclic, tetracyclic, and pentacyclic.

Pentacyclic triterpenes, with five rings, are the most common in nature. A handful of families account for most of what turns up in supplements and food.

Which Mushrooms Contain the Most Triterpenes?

Triterpene content varies enormously by species, and within a species by strain, growing substrate, and which part of the organism you extract. Here is how the five species in Earth Buddy's blend compare, plus Chaga, which is worth understanding even though it is not in any Earth Buddy product.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)

The benchmark. Reishi carries more than 140 identified triterpenes, with ganoderic acids, lucidenic acids, and sterols the most abundant. They occur in the fruiting body, the spores, and the mycelium, though the fruiting body concentrates them most heavily. Those compounds are what make Reishi taste bitter enough that most dogs will not eat it plain.

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)

Turkey Tail is known for its polysaccharides rather than its triterpenes, and that reputation is earned. PSK concentrates in the fruiting body and PSP appears only in the mycelium. Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris)

Cordyceps is a nucleoside story more than a triterpene story. Cordycepin concentrates in the fruiting body, adenosine runs higher in the mycelium, and both parts contribute polysaccharides. Triterpene content is modest by comparison.

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

Lion's Mane produces hericenones in the fruiting body and erinacines in the mycelium, both of which are diterpenoids rather than triterpenes. It belongs in the blend for different reasons than Reishi does, and it is a useful reminder that "terpenoid" covers several distinct compound sizes.

Agarikon (Fomitopsis officinalis)

One of the rarest fungi used in supplements. Agarikon produces antimicrobial coumarins and a distinct triterpene profile, including agaricinic acid. Wild fruiting bodies grow on old-growth conifers over decades, so cultivated mycelium is the only sustainable way to source it.

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)

Chaga is the other heavyweight for triterpene content, with inotodiol and trametenolic acid as its signature compounds. Inotodiol in particular has been studied for its effect on mast cell activity, which is the cell type responsible for histamine release. Chaga is not in any Earth Buddy product, so we are including it here for completeness rather than as a product reference.

What Triterpenes Do in a Dog's or Cat's Body

Triterpenes are studied as immunomodulators, meaning compounds that help the immune system find a normal set point rather than pushing it in one direction. That is a meaningfully different mechanism from a stimulant, and it is the reason adaptogenic mushrooms are used for daily support rather than occasional intervention.

Across the published literature, lanostane triterpenes from fungi are associated with:

Supporting a healthy inflammatory response, particularly the kind associated with normal daily activity and aging. Supporting normal liver function, which is where much of the research on ganoderic acids has concentrated. Supporting the body's defense against oxidative stress, by interacting with free radicals such as hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anions. Helping maintain normal histamine levels, which is where the Chaga research on mast cells fits. Supporting normal cardiovascular function and normal glucose metabolism.

Two honest caveats. Most of this work has been done in cell cultures and rodent models, not in dogs and cats. And triterpene profiles are highly species-specific, so a finding about ganoderic acid in Reishi does not automatically transfer to Turkey Tail or Cordyceps. Read the research as evidence that informs a formulation decision, not as a guarantee of a result in any individual animal.

What the Research on Triterpenes in Dogs Actually Shows

Direct canine research on triterpenes is thin, but it is not zero.

The most rigorous example is a 2021 study published in Molecules that tested a plant-derived triterpene supplement in 60 beagles using a thunderstorm noise model. The dogs were assigned to placebo, four escalating doses of the triterpene tablet, or a positive control, and the researchers measured blood cortisol alongside behavioral activity. The 1x dose produced a statistically significant change in activity during the noise exposure compared with placebo, and cortisol showed a dose-dependent response.

That study used betulinic acid, a lupane triterpene from Souroubea and Platanus, not a mushroom triterpene. It does not tell you what Reishi does in a dog. What it does establish is that triterpenes as a compound class are orally bioavailable in dogs at practical doses and produce measurable physiological changes. That is a more useful foundation than most compound classes in the pet supplement aisle can claim.

The rest of the canine evidence is indirect: whole-mushroom studies where triterpenes are one of several active fractions, and the substantial body of in vitro and rodent work on ganoderic acids. We link to the primary sources at the end of this article so you can read them yourself.

Triterpenes are widespread in plants, generally at lower concentrations than in Reishi or Chaga. Several show up in foods dogs already eat.

The concentrations in food are low enough that they are a nutritional bonus rather than a supplementation strategy. If triterpenes are the goal, a concentrated mushroom extract is the practical route.

Why Extraction Decides Whether Triterpenes Reach the Bottle

This is the part of the triterpene conversation the supplement aisle mostly skips.

Triterpenes are largely alcohol-soluble. Beta-glucans are water-soluble. A manufacturer who runs a hot water extraction gets beta-glucans and discards most of the triterpene content with the spent mushroom material. A manufacturer who sells raw ground mushroom powder without extracting at all gets both compounds locked inside chitin cell walls, which dogs and cats cannot break down efficiently in digestion.

Chitin is the structural problem nobody wants to talk about. It is the same polymer that makes up insect exoskeletons, and it is what mushroom cell walls are built from. Compounds trapped behind an intact chitin wall largely pass through undigested regardless of how good the source material was.

Earth Buddy runs three extraction steps for this reason. Hot water pulls the water-soluble polysaccharides and beta-glucans. Organic cane alcohol pulls the alcohol-soluble fraction, including triterpenes and phenolic compounds. Ultrasound breaks open the chitin cell walls so the compounds inside are actually available. The extract is then freeze-dried into powder or held as a liquid tincture.

We extract from both the fruiting body and the mycelium, because different parts of the organism produce different compounds. Reishi concentrates its triterpenes in the fruiting body, while the mycelium expresses a broader range of protein-coding genes. The question worth asking a mushroom brand is not "fruiting body or mycelium." It is "how did you extract it, and can I see the test results."

How to Choose a Mushroom Supplement With Real Triterpene Content

Four things to check on the label or the brand's website.

Extraction method, stated plainly. Look for dual or triple extraction. If a product only says "hot water extract," the triterpene content is minimal by definition. If it says nothing about extraction at all, it is likely raw powder.

Organic certification. Mushrooms are efficient accumulators. They take up whatever is in their growing substrate, including heavy metals and pesticide residue. USDA Organic certification governs what the substrate can contain.
