Because they are water-soluble, most of them are not stored in any meaningful quantity and have to come in through food every day. What B Vitamins Actually Do in a Dog's Body

B vitamins do not build anything. They are not structural the way protein and minerals are. What they do is act as coenzymes, which means they are the small molecules that enzymes need in order to work at all. Take them away and hundreds of reactions slow down at once.

That is why the signs of running low are so vague. A dog short on B vitamins does not develop one specific look. Energy production drops, nerve signaling gets less efficient, red blood cell formation slows, and skin cells turn over more slowly. What the owner sees is a dog that seems a little off.

Because they dissolve in water rather than fat, most B vitamins are not banked. What the body does not use in a day gets filtered out by the kidneys and leaves in the urine. There are eight, and they are numbered with gaps because several compounds that once carried B numbers were later found to be something other than vitamins. B4, B8, B10, and B11 all had their credentials revoked. What remains is B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12.

Riboflavin is light-sensitive. It degrades on exposure, which is one small argument for keeping food in an opaque container rather than the clear bin on the counter.

Vitamin B3 for Dogs (Niacin)

Niacin is a component of the two coenzymes that show up in more metabolic reactions than any other pair in the body. It supports normal skin and coat, healthy digestive function, and the nervous system.

Dogs have a partial workaround on niacin that cats do not. A dog can convert some dietary tryptophan, an amino acid found in meat, into niacin. The conversion is not efficient enough to cover the requirement on its own, so niacin still has to come in through the diet, but it does give dogs a small buffer. Cats have no such buffer at all, which is one of the clearer nutritional dividing lines between the two species.

Vitamin B5 for Dogs (Pantothenic Acid)

Pantothenic acid is the building block of coenzyme A, the molecule that carries fatty acids and other fuel fragments into the reactions that release energy from them. It also participates in the synthesis of proteins, lipids, neurotransmitters, steroid hormones, and hemoglobin.

The name comes from the Greek for "from everywhere," which is a fair description of how widely it is distributed in food. Coming up short on B5 alone is uncommon in dogs eating a normal diet.

Vitamin B6 for Dogs (Pyridoxine)

B6 does more distinct jobs than any other vitamin in the group. It is central to amino acid metabolism, to the synthesis of neurotransmitters including serotonin and dopamine, to the formation of hemoglobin, and to normal red blood cell health. Biotin is the one most pet parents have heard of, usually from a skin and coat supplement label. The association is real. Biotin is required for the metabolism of fatty acids, and skin and hair are among the most fat-dependent, fastest-turning-over tissues in the body, so they are the first place a shortfall becomes visible. Folate is also a useful diagnostic marker. Because folate is absorbed in the upper small intestine and B12 is absorbed at the far end, the relationship between the two on a blood panel tells your vet something about where in the digestive tract a problem might sit. That is one of the reasons the two are usually run together.

Why B Vitamins Run Low Even on a Complete Diet

Here is the part most articles skip. If a food is labeled complete and balanced, it has been formulated to meet published nutrient profiles, and for most dogs most of the time that is enough. But a nutrient profile describes what goes into a formula, not what survives the process, not what makes it across the intestinal wall, and not what a particular dog's gut contributes or consumes along the way. Three specific things can move the real number.

Thiamine Is the First Casualty of Heat and Time

Thiamine is the most heat-labile vitamin in the B group, and extruded kibble is made by forcing dough through a die at high temperature and pressure. Manufacturers know this and overformulate to compensate. What is less widely discussed is that thiamine keeps degrading in the bag after it leaves the plant.

A 2017 review in Veterinary Sciences pulled together the available data on this and cited losses of roughly 34 percent in extruded dry dog food and 58 percent in extruded dry cat food over eighteen months of storage. The same review notes that AAFCO updated its thiamine recommendations in 2016 to align with the National Research Council's numbers, which tells you the industry has been actively revising its assumptions here.

None of that means kibble is thiamine-deficient. It means the number on the guaranteed analysis is a snapshot at manufacture, and the practical takeaway is unglamorous: buy bag sizes your dog will finish in a few weeks rather than a few months, keep the bag sealed and out of heat and light, and do not decant into a clear container on a sunny counter.

Two other thiamine antagonists are worth knowing. Raw freshwater fish and some raw shellfish contain thiaminase, an enzyme that breaks thiamine down directly. Cooking destroys the enzyme. And sulfite preservatives, which are not permitted in pet food in the United States but do appear in some fresh meat products sold for human consumption, also degrade thiamine. B12 Absorption in Dogs Runs Through the Pancreas and the Ileum

This is the one that surprises people, including people who know human nutrition well.

In humans, the protein that carries B12 through the digestive tract, called intrinsic factor, is made almost entirely by cells in the stomach lining. In dogs it is not. According to a 2020 review in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, intrinsic factor in dogs "is produced primarily by the exocrine pancreas and to a lesser extent in the stomach."

From there, B12 bound to intrinsic factor travels the entire length of the small intestine to be absorbed at the very end, in the ileum, through a specific receptor called cubam. That is a long, narrow, single-point-of-failure pathway, and it means B12 status in a dog is really a readout on two organs: the pancreas and the far end of the small intestine.

The practical consequence is that a dog with ongoing digestive trouble can run low on B12 no matter how much of it is in the bowl. The same review lists chronic inflammatory conditions of the intestine, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and gut dysbiosis among the causes, and notes that in dysbiosis the resident bacteria both compete for cobalamin directly and appear to reduce expression of the receptor that absorbs it.

That is the gut-first argument on this page, and it is not a marketing line. It is why gut health in dogs and B vitamin status are the same conversation.

Your Dog's Gut Bacteria Make Some of the Supply

Bacteria in the large intestine synthesize B vitamins. That has been known for a long time in ruminants and rodents. What is newer is a sense of how much it varies between species with different diets.

A 2021 study in mSystems surveyed gut microbial genomes across mammals with different feeding strategies and found something the authors did not expect. Carnivorous mammals carried a higher abundance of genes for cobalamin and thiamine synthesis in their gut communities than herbivores or omnivores did.

How much of that microbially produced supply a dog actually absorbs is an open question, because most of it is produced in the colon, downstream of where B12 is taken up. The honest read is that the microbiome is a real and underappreciated variable in B vitamin status, that the size of its contribution is not settled, and that a disrupted gut community is one more reason a dog on paper-perfect food can still come up short in practice.

Appetite, Age, and Stress

The least scientific reason is often the actual reason. A dog that is not eating is not taking in B vitamins, full stop, and because most of the group is not stored, that matters within days rather than months.

Appetite drops for a lot of ordinary reasons: a stressful stretch at home, travel, recovery from a procedure, a new food the dog has not decided about yet, or simply age. Older dogs eat less and absorb less.   • Weight loss despite eating
  • A dull, thinning, or flaky coat
  • Loose stool that keeps coming back and will not settle
  • Poor growth in a puppy
  • Changes in coordination, balance, or how the eyes track

The last one is different in kind from the others. Coordination and eye changes are the picture that comes with a thiamine problem specifically, and that is not a wait-and-see situation.

What Your Vet Checks

B vitamin status is not something you can read off a dog. It is measured, and the measurement is ordinary.

Serum cobalamin and serum folate are usually run as a pair on a single blood draw, often alongside pancreatic markers, and the relationship between the two values tells your vet something about where in the digestive tract to look. Thiamine can be measured directly through blood testing, though it is a less routine test and usually reserved for cases where the clinical picture points that way.

Call your vet the same day, rather than waiting, if your dog shows sudden loss of appetite together with wobbliness, a head tilt, unusual eye movements, or a seizure. Those signs together are the thiamine picture, they can move quickly, and they respond to prompt veterinary care.

Foods That Contain B Vitamins for Dogs

The B group is well distributed across ordinary foods, and animal proteins carry most of them together, which is convenient. Organ meat is the single densest source of the group as a whole. Liver in particular carries meaningful amounts of B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, and B12 at once.

Two things affect how much of this actually reaches your dog. Cooking method matters, because B vitamins are water-soluble and a meaningful fraction of them leaves in the cooking water. If you boil, use the liquid rather than pouring it down the drain. And portion matters, because organ meat is dense enough that a little goes a long way. Liver in particular is very high in preformed vitamin A, which unlike the B group is fat-soluble and does accumulate, so it belongs in a bowl as a small regular addition rather than a main course.

A Note on Raw Egg Whites and Biotin

Egg whites contain a protein called avidin that binds biotin tightly enough to make it unavailable for absorption. This is one of the cleanest examples of a food antagonist in nutrition, and it is the reason "raw egg for a shiny coat" is advice that works against itself.

The practical version is simple. Cooking denatures avidin and the problem goes away. An occasional raw egg is not going to move the needle on a dog eating a varied diet, but raw egg whites as a daily habit are working against the biotin in the rest of the bowl. Cook the egg, feed the yolk with it, and you get the biotin instead of losing it.

Vitamin B Complex for Dogs: What It Is and Who Needs It

A vitamin B complex is a single product containing all eight B vitamins together, usually in a chewable tablet, a powder, or a liquid. Veterinarians also use injectable B complex, which bypasses the digestive tract entirely and is the standard approach when absorption is the problem rather than intake.

The logic of dosing them together is sound. B vitamins work as a set, they participate in overlapping pathways, and supplementing one in isolation at a high dose can shift the balance of the others. A complex keeps the ratios sensible.

Who actually benefits is a narrower group than the supplement aisle implies. A healthy adult dog eating a complete, well-stored commercial diet is generally covered. The dogs where a complex is worth a conversation with your vet are:

  • Dogs with ongoing digestive trouble, especially loose stool that keeps returning
  • Dogs recovering from a procedure or an extended illness
  • Dogs eating a home-prepared diet that has not been formulated by a professional
  • Dogs on long courses of medication that affect appetite or absorption
  • Senior dogs who are eating less than they used to
  • Dogs that have had a low result on serum cobalamin or folate

Notice what is not on that list: a healthy dog whose owner wants more energy from them. B vitamins are not a stimulant. Supplementing a dog who is not short on them produces expensive urine and nothing else.

When you do supplement, three things separate a product worth buying from one that is not. Can a Dog Get Too Much Vitamin B?

Mostly no, and specifically yes.

Because seven of the eight are water-soluble and readily excreted, the margin on them is wide. A dog getting more than they need generally passes the surplus in urine. This is why B complex products carry a much lower risk profile than fat-soluble vitamin products, and why vitamin A and vitamin D are the ones veterinarians worry about in over-supplemented dogs.

B6 is the exception, and it is a real one. At sustained high doses, pyridoxine does not behave like a harmless water-soluble vitamin. This has been studied directly in dogs: a 1978 study in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology examined subacute pyridoxine dosing in beagles, and the National Research Council's Vitamin Tolerance of Animals reviews the tolerance data across species. The finding, in both, is that B6 has a ceiling and that exceeding it by a wide margin over time affects nerve function. Nothing about a normal diet or a properly dosed complex gets near that ceiling. Niacin at high single doses is the other one worth knowing, mainly because it can cause vomiting and put a dog off their food, which is self-defeating if the goal was better nutrition in the first place.

The rule is not complicated. Dose to the product label and to your dog's weight, do not stack multiple products carrying the same vitamin without adding up the total, and do not use human B complex tablets, which are formulated for a body several times larger and sometimes contain xylitol.

Do Cats Need B Vitamins Too?

Yes, and in one respect more than dogs do.

Cats are obligate carnivores and their B vitamin requirements run higher across most of the group. The clearest difference is niacin. A dog can convert some tryptophan into niacin, giving them a partial buffer if dietary niacin runs short. A cat cannot make that conversion in any useful amount, because the enzyme pathway that would divert tryptophan toward niacin is outcompeted in cats by an enzyme that sends it elsewhere. All of a cat's niacin has to come from food.

Thiamine is the other one where cats are more exposed. The storage-loss figures cited above were higher for extruded cat food than dog food, and cats have a higher thiamine requirement to begin with.

The absorption story is similar in both species. Intrinsic factor in cats is produced by the pancreas alone, with no gastric contribution at all, which makes the pancreatic dependency even more absolute than it is in dogs.
